Thin, lightweight sound insulation for maritime and aeronautical applications

Development in progress
A technological revolution in sound insulation, specifically designed for maritime and aeronautical applications due to its light weight, small size and excellent acoustic performance.
UMI market research for sound insulation in aeronautics

Market benefits

  • Excellent acoustic performance (up to +90%)
  • A third thinner
  • Wide insulation frequency (100 Hz to 10,000 Hz) that is higher or lower depending on the application
  • Applicable for structuring for all types of materials (anti-fire, lightweight, durable)
  • Can be structured as a thermal insulator

Issue

The noise on board ships or aircraft is often a source of annoyance and sometimes even fatigue. Among the noises most frequently cited is the noise from engines, external aerodynamic noises, and noise from internal equipment (ventilation, hydraulic circuits, etc.). In addition, noise insulation is currently provided by fibrous or foam materials that have an intrinsic ability to absorb noise. These solutions only provide very limited improvement in acoustic comfort for low frequencies, where large quantities of materials would need to be used, an option that is simply not possible on board vehicles (aircraft or ships) due to volume and weight constraints. These materials are thus:
-not very effective for low frequencies due to the lack of space for the volume of material required to be effective,
-for hygiene reasons cannot be visible or in contact with users,
-have limited durability to compaction and their sensitivity to moisture.

There is thus no solution currently on the market that combines acoustic comfort against low frequencies with thinness and low weight.

Solution

We have developed a revolutionary solution in the form of a rigid or supple panel with noise absorption or reflection capabilities that perform well and are highly competitive compared to current technologies (rock wool, fiberglass, polymer foam). Thanks to its special macroscopic structure (hidden or visible), our technology enables the following:
-reduces the thickness of structures (partitions, doors, panels) whilst maintaining the same level of noise insulation, with obvious improvements in volume (reduced by at least a third!), but also reductions in weight and cost,
– significant improvement in noise insulation performance in a structure of equivalent thickness for unequalled noise insulation: over a 90% increase in noise insulation.
Our technology can also be integrated into heavier materials (wood, steel, etc.) and lightweight materials (aluminum, composites, etc.), can be transparent or translucid (PMMA, PC, etc.), without any need for the addition of any intrinsically noise absorbent materials. Thus, depending on the material chosen, our technology can be completely non-flammable.
