Issue

Traditional venous blood collection requires a medical professional, cold storage, biohazard precautions and more blood than is required for standard tests making the value chain overly expensive and time consuming for professionals and patients.

Capillary blood samples collected as dried blood spots address the main issues identified with venous blood draws but the blood samples are not standardized and may be rejected due to faulty application especially for neonatal screening and in home use by a layperson. Volume control for dried blood spot samples can only be achieved using a volumetric micro pipette by professional trained staff.

Quantitative analysis is difficult using dried blood spot samples due to the lack of volume control and standardization of samples, therefore manual sub punches are required that are less reliable (due to hemocratit bias) and the process is not automatable.

Solution

The HemaXis micro blood collection device was designed to expand and increase the potential of dried blood spot analysis. The all-in-one kit incorporates a microfluidic chip with a standard filter card and a protective case to provide a practical solution for whole blood collection at the finger tip which can be performed by a layperson in any suitable location.

The integration of the microfluidic chip serves as the core technology enabling easy blood collection by the user and ensures standardization of samples by accurately and precisely controlling blood volume.

After the blood samples are collected, the kit is closed and the samples are transferred to a standard filter card (e.g. Whatman 903) that allows the samples to be stored and transported at room temperatures in a dry format. The included filter card is fully compatible with automated handling processes in the lab. The device delivers standardized, accurate and precise blood samples with no hemocratit bias. The repeatability in volume control is comparable to a volumetric micro pipette so there is no need for a sub punch as the entire spot can be used for extraction, making quantitative tests easy to perform.

Due to the dried format of the samples there is no need for expensive cold storage and bio-hazard packaging for transportation. Studies show dried blood spot collection is ~30-40% less expensive than the liquid blood sampling value chain.
