Issue

To meet the needs of modern chemistry, industry is turning more frequently toward products sourced from biomass. However, these products often require a costly cultivation or growing stage. Once the processing steps are added, these costs may be too high for many companies.

In parallel, food waste and unused food constitute a large proportion of today’s household waste.

Coffee grounds in particular compose several thousand tons per year, whilst only a small part of the chemical components of the coffee are extracted when preparing drinks.

Solution

We recycle coffee grounds by extracting the chemical components of interest to make high quality chemical substances at competitive prices.

The components that can be extracted are:

1/ Diterpenes, cafestol and kahweol in particular. These molecules are composed of a diterpenic nucleus, heterocyclic furan, and a glycone chain. They are known for their anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties.

2/ Phytosterols play a role in lowering the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Coffee sterols (steran nucleus with hydroxyls) can for example be of interest as an alternative to the soya sterols classically used as they are not produced from food biomass.

3/ Mannitol, a mannose polysaccharide glucose epimer, can be used as a sweetener. The raw fibers may also be of interest for dietetic food applications.
